What I Use - Clear

I find the hardest part of being a VFX artist is to manage my time when I’m not working. When things get busy, I have difficulty getting everything done that I need to do. Throw on my teaching schedule on top of it all, and very often I found myself forgetting things that needed to get done.

I’ve started using an app called Clear to help me manage things. It’s a very simple app that makes lists and allows you to reorder them and create reminders for you.

One of the main reasons why I like it is because it has versions for the iPad, iPhone and for the Mac and it will seamlessly sync between them all. When I’m out of the condo I always have my phone with me, so as soon as something comes up, I immediately make a note about it in Clear. That has proved to be the vital step, to get it out of my brain and on a list as soon as possible. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to do something because it was mentioned in an email and then the email sunk to the bottom of my screen, forgotten.

Even though this has only been part of my workflow for a few weeks, it’s made a huge difference. And yes, this exact same thing could be done with a piece of paper, but I don’t keep a notepad on me at all times. I also like Clear because of it’s very intuitive interface, the satisfying ‘plink’ sound it makes when I scratch something off as done, and that it looks pretty.

I’m tempted to switch to Checkmark as it has location based reminders and just generally seems more powerful, but the lack of an iPad and Mac version rule it out. Once I’m at home I don’t really look at my phone, so the sync between my Mac and iPad are vital. Plus, there’s something to be said for simplicity, which Clear definitely has.
